The education and careers industries are full to the brim with talk about what is coming up in careers.
As AI takes over the world, as work processes are increasingly digitised, as workers expect more free time, as the green revolution sets in, as people work remotely more and more, things are definitively changing.
A few things though to note when you're making decisions:
Follow global trends:
- The world is going digital. This means upping your own computer skills, even learning a coding language, will only help you. Even if you are applying for international development roles, organisations will expect you to be proficient online, even manage their social media accounts. So get good at computing!
- The biggest recruiters of the future are also all things digital! Software development, coding, programming, cybersecurity, virtual reality, data analyst, AI specialist, and content analyst jobs are ever more on the rise.
- The knock-on effect of the digital economy though is that robots will be taking over some of our jobs, like service jobs in shops and banks, so think about what is vanishing too when you're thinking of careers.
- High skilled work in healthcare, engineering, and STEM areas will also be on the rise.
- People are living longer, so expect insurance to attract even more employees in the years to come.
- The mental health and wellbeing sectors are also on the rise. This is partly to do with Covid, partly because we are more comfortable being open about mental health, but also because people are fed up with the stress of intense work schedules and are more inclined to a reformed (zen) way of life. Watch out particularly for public sector and third sector (charity/NGO) roles in mental health and wellbeing.
- Online stores have boomed since Covid so think about honing your entrepreneurialism online especially for supplementary income.
While there is less security and certainty now, there is more potential for freedom and career exploration.
