Hello everyone
I had some lovely news today.
Career Matters Magazine, the monthly magazine of the Career Development Institute, will be publishing an abridged version of my MA thesis in January next year.
I’m so very excited to have the opportunity to share my work because it is rooted in something I’m so very passionate about—namely, the voice.
Briefly: I created a careers methodology called 3D Careers which is rooted in my theory of voice, a kind of offshoot of the work I did as a creative artist.
It comes back to my own story of losing my voice at school and feeling very lost in life until I did the one thing I had avoided—which was to listen to my own heart.
We don’t listen to ourselves well, do we? We listen much better to the other voices in life—our parents, teachers, siblings, classes, bosses, religious figures.
Really anyone but ourselves.
This journey set me on a path of the voice. I had thought that it would end once I’d finished my creative endeavours.
Little did I know how wrong I would be, that I was only beginning my journey with the voice.
The essential findings from the study were two things:
- All participants wanted some creative expression in their work and that professional fulfilment somehow tied in with creativity.
- All participants also told me what they wanted to do within the first five minutes of meeting, but seemed not to have noticed. We had to conduct three whole 90 minute one-to-one sessions, plus summary report, before they were willing to engage with/believe/even hear the power of their own words.
It is these two things that have compelled me to further study.
I am still in disbelief about it all!
Having lost my own voice through academic pressure the very last place I expected to end up was ever more attached to academia.
But the path of the voice is not what we can predict or anticipate for ourselves.
The path of the voice is more a verb...one voices throughout their rightful journey…but does not necessarily end up at a single destination.
I will share more as I find out more.
